First Century Judaism: The historical and archaeological background to the rise of Christianity in the Holy-Land

The first century was a crucial period not only in the history of Palestine or for the Jewish people but also in the history of civilization. The events that lead to he destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem were weaved in the rise of ectarianism inside Jewish society – a process that gave birth to Christianity. In this course we will read the Literary sources – mainly Flavius Josephus – that shed light on these turbulent years that lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and to the rise of Christianity on the same socio-political cum religious background.
